A weekend at Whitewalls featuring a bonanza of flames and fireworks, a feast of dinners and puddings, and a fine collection of caving trips.
Ogof Ffynnon Ddu was the destination of choice for most people for Saturday’s caving, with three very different trips taking place within the cave system. The first of which was the “caving classic” that is the OFD through-trip, following the streamway from the OFD 1 entrance to exit from OFD 2 with a visit to Selenite Tunnel and the Judge and Trident. A second, somewhat drier but equally sporting excursion took place to the Northern Lights - an interesting and somewhat lesser visited part of the cave. The third party enjoyed a circular tour of some of the interesting sights of OFD 2, including the Mini-Columns, Speedy Caver, The Bedding Chambers, Salubrious Passage, The Judge and Trident, Swamp Creek and The Knave.
There were also two parties in Agen Allwedd on Saturday, with a bolting trip to hitherto unexplored parts of Midnight Passage and Meander Passage, while digging was also being undertaken in a recent new extension in Priory Road. Another party of cavers descended the Clydach Gorge for a trip to Ogof Nant Rhin.
The Saturday festivities started with the bonfire in the Whitewalls garden, followed by fireworks and feast of chilli, spuds, stew, snacks and assorted puddings, washed down with beer and cider on tap. Sunday’s caving trips included a visit to formations in Ogof Draenen and journey to The Music Room in Aggy, while others made the most of the lack of rain by climbing, walking and dig hunting in the local area.
